Recital for Cathy / Norma

Stage work by Luciano Berio / A music theatre séance based on Vincenzo Bellini

RECITAL FOR CATHY

A concert goes wrong: The pianist is too late, the audience too early – depending on the viewpoint. The singer tries to cover up the embarrassment. But then she gives vent to her anger in a tirade interspersed with countless scraps of her vocal repertoire and relentlessly settles accounts with her life, her audience and the music business.

Opera and stage director Andrea Moses stages Luciano Berio's stage work from 1972, whirling up the fragments of a diva's psyche with relish and playing in the ruins of European cultural history.

NORMA A music theatre séance

Version by Julia Lwowski. Arrangement by André Kassel.

The life of the Gallic high priestess Norma is also at a turning point. Her relationship with the Roman proconsul Pollione is over - the young novice Adalgisa has taken her place. A life construct in the penumbra, between love and duty, is now dissolved. But what will follow? Will she carry out the revenge, which is actually meant for Pollione, on the children they have together? Or will Norma rekindle the long-suppressed belligerence of her countrymen against the Romans? Must her life inevitably end in sacrificial death?

In a theatrical participatory ritual, we embark together with Norma on a search for a new definition of femininity beyond the previous role attributions.
