Cuckoo in the Suitcase

Musical theatre for kids by Matthias Kaul

Two travelers meet at a signpost, linger and get to know each other. Piece by piece they unpack their suitcases, a musical game unfolds with the sounding things they bring out, and from the game small and big stories unfold, until the two finally have to move on... In Matthias Kaul's music theater, children between the ages of 3 and 7 experience how an enchanting sang and sound event emerges from the play with everyday objects and the human voice.

»Kuckuck im Koffer«, which was created in 2012 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and became a long-running hit there, is one of the last pieces by composer Matthias Kaul, who recently passed away. Kaul was one of the most extraordinary phenomena in the new music business of recent decades: sound researcher, instrument tinkerer, musical clown and loving artist. Ioana Petre, after her successful production of »Die Königin der Farben« is now developing and staging this children's musical theater in Weimar.

»Kuckuck im Koffer«, will also be performed in a mobile version in kindergartens and in elementary school classrooms. For related inquiries and bookings, contact: michaela.untermann@nationaltheater-weimar.de
